CAT 6 – Terra Nova

Developed and published by CTB McGraw-Hill, the Terra Nova test is a standardized achievement test normed nationally that provides performance data in the areas of reading, language arts and mathematics.  It is designed to measure concepts, processes, and objectives taught throughout the nation. Reported  scores include NCE, NP, and GE. (Grade 2 only)

A variety of alternative assessments are used at Harrison Hill School of Inquiry. These formative and summative assessments include, but are not limited to, the following:

Standards-based Assessments: Teacher-created tests, based on the standards play a major role in the day-to-day assessment of students. These tests are generally criterion referenced.

Writing Prompt: Students are given a grade-level writing prompt at least once each quarter. The prompt is assessed by using a student-friendly/ISTEP, grade-level writing rubric.

Quarterly Math Assessments: Each grading period the principal gives students in every homeroom a math facts timed test. The test problems are developed by classroom teachers and are based on the Indiana academic math standards.

Performance and Exhibition Tasks: These assessments require students to apply their knowledge and skills in an authentic learning experience. They are generally scored through the use of rubrics.

Student Projects: Differentiated projects are scored by rubrics.

Observational/Anecdotal Notes: Assessments are obtained through reading and writing conferences with students, and are used to develop future instruction.

Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA): This instrument assesses reading comprehension, fluency, accuracy rate, and general reading attitudes.

Journals: This tool allows students to respond to literature, read alouds, lectures, and can also be used for goal setting and self-directed learning.

Running Records: An instrument used to assess reading level, style, and accuracy.

STAR Reading: STAR Reading is a computer-software assessment program used to measure literacy development. It also helps to determine placement for new students and guides reading instruction and practice.

STAR Early Literacy: STAR Early Literacy is a software assessment program used to assess reading readiness and early literacy skills. This program monitors student progress and guides planning and individual instruction.

STAR Math: STAR Math is a computer-software assessment program used to measure mathematic development. Accelerated Reader Quizzes: A computer software program used to assess reading comprehension on various texts.
